AshokanBoaters.org Update 6/11/11 Welcome to our 2nd season. Last year, we collected 430 signatures on paper petitions and 445 online, total 875, most of them local, that’s a lot of boaters! 1. Although the DEP isn’t ready to consider recreational boating on the Ashokan right now, they are waiting for the 3 year pilot program on the Cannonsville Reservoir to wrap up this year, write the assess- ment report and, based on the report, decide what to do next. This puts us less than a year away from the possibility of a decision. 2. A visit to the Cannonsville Reservoir will show you how well the program is running and how fabulous it is to be on beautiful reservoir waters. In days gone by, there were 3 times the number of fisherman active today, so recreational boating will simply bring reservoir use back up to former levels. 3. Please spread the word. Let’s let the DEP know how much support there is for a recreational boating program on the Ashokan. Thanks for your support. Curry Rinzler, Project Manager AshokanBoaters.org curryrinzlerarchitect.com Notes: 1. There are approximately 1800 fishing boats at the Ashokan: info from DEP personnel at the Ashokan steam cleaning facility. Most are rarely used. 2. Info from John Vickers, Chief of Western Operations, DEP 3. Info from Al, Al’s Sport Store, Downsville, NY |
